The 420 Funk Mob a.k.a. WEFUNK FM started off the
year with an appearance at the 2005 Super bowl. They had the notable
distinction of being the ONLY UNSIGNED band to appear as part of
the Official Super Bowl Sunday entertainment extravagance that included
Alicia Keys, Gretchen Wilson, and Paul McCartney. 420FM was the
ESPN/NFL Tailgate Party Band performing at the ESPN House in the
stadiums parking lot..
420FM is led by Mike “Clip" Payne featuring Gabe Gonzalez
, Lige Curry and special guest Mike "Kidd Funkadelic"
Hampton with a revolving cast of current and former members of the
legendary Parliament/Funkadelic in addition to All-Star musicians
from across the globe. Past Guests have included; George Clinton,
Amp Fiddler, Billy Bass Nelson, Skeet Curtis, Garry Shider and Boogie
Mosson from P-funk. Punk's Dr. Know and Daryl Jenifer. Jazzman Stanley
Jordan, Bluegrass virtuoso Eric McFadden and members of Country
music's hottest posse, the MuzikMafia's Jon Nicholson and Jerry
Navarro.
"Arranged with filtered vocals, psychedelic
melodies, gut-wrenching rhythms, wah-wah pedals, thick bass lines,
and Clip’s coarse, dense tone...the 420FM/DRUGS sound like
a medley between some spunky Grateful Dead and a Jimi Hendrix-style
jam session” raved the University of Miami Hurricane.
“The 420 FM quickly created a deeply woven
fabric of funk layers that brought the audience into frenzied dance
late into the night.” stated a review in the Times.
Assaulting a crowd with a night of music that crosses all musical
boundaries. Funk, Soul, Hip Hop and Rock n Roll are just part of
the journey fans take at a 420 Funk Mob show. Their debut performance
before a sold out crowd at New York City’s legendary TRAMPS
in 1997 began an annual “Off Days” party for the East
Coast members of P-Funk that soon took on an underground life of
its own. Selling out clubs and colleges on the down low, while doing
special appearances at festivals in Europe and the United States.
In November 2004 the bands second concert album “Alive in
Spain” a 3 cd set recorded at the Chillin’ Drone Festival
in Zaragoza Spain was released critics hailed them as "
a band determined to build on the legacy of George Clinton, and
a return to the Pedro Bell era of Funkadelic Glory!".
In 2005 the 420 Funk Mob returned to the Church of Universal Love
& Music's Freedom Festival on July 3th in Acme, Pennsylvania
The band ventured to .Europe for the Audiosoul Festival in Heidelberg
Germany. 4000 people packed themselves into the courtyard of the
1200 year old castle to catch the 420 Funk with their special guests
DRUGS:The Mis-Americans,
Fred Wesley and George Clinton. "The
fans, mostly below 30, went fully into ecstasy. Everyone in the
Castle Courtyard was dancing.People were jumping up and down, throwing
thier hands in the air with the funk sign salute. The
driving sound of the Funk Mob with special guest Fred Wesley, had
the entire crowd swaying to the Seductive Psychedelic Funky Rhythms."
