Snoop Lights Up
The 3rd Annual Stony Awards
by Steve Bloom
....Clinton isn't
a film star, but when the opportunity presented itself to bring
him as a special guest presenter, we couldn't resist. We told him
he'd be presenting the Stoner of the Year Award. Clinton in town
for a series of TRIPFEST shows organized by P-Funk
offshoot WEFUNK, arrived in a tour
bus and created quite a stir as he and his band members parked on
42nd street and made their Grand Entrance
Clinton immediatly
was brought back to Snoop's dressing room, where he inhaled one
or more of Snoop's chocolate flavored honey blunts. It
sent off shock waves in Dr. Funkenstein's chemically sensative system.
He promptly collapsed on the couch of our production office as the
show went on. When it was time to present the Stoner of the Year
award, he said he was too high to read the nomination. We did it
for him.
After the video clips, he opened the envelope and gruffly barked
over and over "Snoop Dog, Snoop Dog!"
Snoop Dog made his
second visit to the stage. He hugged Clinton, then asked Bishop
Don Magic Juan to "Blaze up one of them Blunts." Snoop
inhaled slowly and proclaimed in a cloud of Smoke,"All the
real players in the house-Ice T, Bishop Don Magic Juan, Soopafly,
George Clinton Can anybody say, "Smoke that Shit'?" The
crowd enthusiastically responded and he called again and again.
"We fucked up right now, Drinkin' smokin', Snoop said. "We
lovin' the ceremonies. Y'all keep having this kind of shit and we'll
keep showin' up. Church!"

Stony Awards Afterview
When we rolled up to the Stony Awards in the
Bus the press and the crowd still hadn't been let into the building.
The crowd started to get agitated and knew something was up as we
sat in front of the venue. Flashbulbs started popin' and the crowd
started to yell as Dr. Funkenstein emerged from the bus in full
costume followed by Mike Clip Payne. The rest of Wefunk Mob stumbled
out after having spent the entire ride down from Woodstock getting
our 420 on.
After a brief photo
op outside B.B. Kings we were ushered
to the VIP section and given a handful of HUGE Buds by some HIGH
TIMES staffers. After the initial smoke cleared we found our self
surrounded by a multitude of Rap, Movie and Enterainment superstars.
First Snoop Dog and crew came
over to the table to pay his respects to the Maggot Overlord. Close
on his heels came Ice-T and his posse. Then came a procession, a
who's who's of up and coming talent in the entertainment industry
that lasted about a half hour until we could usher George backstage.
Meanwhile, Majic Juan
had been given a special table in the middle of the hall. He quickly
set himself up with a big bottle of Moet, a fat blunt and a pile of
the just released 420FM "Live on the Off
Days" Cd's. The Wefunk infultration of the Stony Awards
had begun. The perfect place to turn the public onto the first disc
by the 420 Funk Mob. I slipped a copy to
Woodstock neighbor Ethan Hawke who won an award earlier that evening.
Everyone who passed by the table or was in arms length received a free
copy of the cd.
When it came
time for the After Show party to start Snoop Dog and his posse had already
split. George and Clip came to the rescue and jumped up with the Cannibus
Cup Band and performed a medley of US Custom Coast Guard Dope Dog/Niggerish/Ludicris
and finished it off with Atomic Dog. Snoop's beats, with a Reggae groove,
backed by George and Clip! It was off the hook! George got the people
on their feet chanting while Clip was tossing cd's out to the crowd.
420 in Da House!!
It was the pefect
way to end the first TRIPFEST Weekend of 2002 featuring the 420FM with
special guest George Clinton, DRUGS, and the Kidd Funkadelic Experience.
Two Sold Out club dates at The Haunt in Ithaca and the Stone Pony in
Asbury Park. Followd by two sold out college shows in one day. An afternoon
hit at Bard and an evening show at Vasser. Ending it all by turning
the High Times Stony Awards
into a Cd release party for the for the 420 Funk Mob was icing on the
cake.
"It was
great; like 1969 all over again," George said when it was all over.
